EASTERN CAPE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SETTLEMENTS SPEEDS UP DELIVERY

Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements has accelerated delivery of houses to

over 400 deserving beneficiaries across the province this week. Today, 12 December

2024, MEC for Public Works, Infrastructure and Human Settlements Hon. Siphokazi

Lusithi, handed over 74 houses to families in need in Alexandria under the Ndlambe

Local Municipality.

“This week we have handed over houses across the province to demonstrate

government’s commitment of fulfilling the mandate of the department that of

establishing integrated sustainable human settlements, and that is what we are doing

here today in Alexandria,” said MEC Lusithi. This forms part of government’s drive to

ensure the most destitute and vulnerable in society are provided with decent quality

houses. House handovers were held in various parts of the province including, Buffalo

City Metropolitan Municipality, OR Tambo and Sarah Baartman.

The 74 beneficiaries in Ndlambe Local Municipality benefitted from two projects under

the Remedial (Rectification) Works Programme. “My life has now changed with this new

house, I am very happy today. My old house had cracks and rain would come in through

the roof,” said Lizzie Samani, 72, in Alexandria today. Samani’s house forms part of the

Alexandria 402 project, which already has 30 completed houses.

The other project is Alexandria 383 with 44 completed houses, which includes 71-yearold Nomangsesi Dyantyi’s house. “I am overjoyed and full of gratitude to everyone who

helped me get a house. I want to thank the people that built my house, they are also

here today.”

The Remedial Works Programme is critical to redressing the quality challenges

experienced in old projects. Through this programme, the Department has been able to

assist 4171 beneficiaries over the past five years.
